Peter D. Gerakaris’ first site-specific work, Spectrumorphosis strives to synthesize atmospheric light with the sunroom environment. Playing with the color spectrum, Gerakaris seeks to harmonize hot and cool tones that usually are used in contrast with one another. Sunlight filters into the room through vinyl gels painted with vibrant botanical and biomorphic imagery, generating a tropical reversal of the winter landscape. A stereographic wall mural with botanical silhouettes suggestive of retinal after-images covers the north wall to enhance the viewer's experience of the total environment. Several plants capture the filtered light on their broad leaves, heightening the tropical artifice. Gerakaris’ exploration of the relationship between light and color produces rhythmic patterns throughout the room, creating an immersive experience for visitors.
Spectrumorphosis is Peter D. Gerakaris’ first solo exhibition. Upcoming exhibitions planned for 2007 include a solo, works-on-paper exhibit at Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts, New York, NY, in May, and a group show at Moti Hasson Gallery, New York, NY, this summer. Gerakaris’ previous group exhibitions in the United States include AIM 26, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx, NY; Art of the World, Haven Arts, Bronx, NY; Vice Versa, MATCH Artspace, New York, NY; After Bloom, WorldArt Gallery, New York, NY; and Out of Body, Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT. He has received international exposure in a number of group exhibitions, including Dai Ti (RePlacement), Chinese Contemporary Gallery, Beijing, China; My Beijing, RocketArt Gallery, Newcastle, Australia; and Via Dei Barbieri, The Palazzo Lazzaroni, Rome, Italy. Residencies include the Beijing Red Gate Artist Residency and the Vermont Studio Center Clowes Residency. Gerakaris is working towards his MFA at Hunter College, New York, NY, and earned his BFA from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. For more information www.petergerakaris.com.
