Wave Hill’s Visual Arts Program presents the work of contemporary artists who explore, demonstrate, or otherwise reflect upon the dynamic relationship between people and nature through exhibitions in Glyndor Gallery, the Sunroom Project Space, and generated@wavehill, as well as through the Winter Workspace Program. Artists may submit applications to General Opportunities, the Van Lier Visual Artist Fellowship and the Sunroom Project Space through this online submissions portal. Program descriptions and deadlines are listed below. Applicants will be contacted by e-mail to confirm receipt of complete application and to notify applicants regarding final decisions. 2013 Sunroom Project Space Program Application Deadline: April 17, 2012
Information Session: March 4, 2012 at Wave Hill
The Sunroom Project Space is a venue for New York-area emerging artists to create site-specific work for a six-week solo show or special project to be exhibited in one of the two windowed sunrooms in Wave Hill’s Glyndor House. Five artists will be selected for solo exhibitions in 2013. Work in all media will be considered and artists are encouraged to experiment with the parameters of traditional display and exhibition formats. For images of the Sunroom Project Space, click here.
General Opportunities Application deadline for 2012 has passed; new guidelines will be posted in the fall of 2012.
The Curators identify artists for Glyndor Gallery, the Winter Workspace Program and generated@wavehill in many different ways. Artists may submit their work for consideration for future opportunities and are strongly encouraged to visit before submitting. Submissions will be reviewed within two months after the deadline.
Glyndor Gallery: Two or three thematic group exhibitions are curated for the spring, summer and fall in Wave Hill’s Glyndor House. Exhibitions generally combine painting, sculpture, works on paper, installation, photography and some video. Artworks are borrowed and new works are created for exhibition. The gallery occupies three spacious rooms and other ancillary spaces on the main floor of this Georgian Revival house. The rooms are very flexible with excellent natural light, but cannot be fully darkened.
Winter Workspace Program: From January to March, the galleries are turned over to artists to use as a workspace. Participatory projects that engage the public and artists who are interested in studying our collection are encouraged. This program is only open to artists living in New York State and offers workspace, not living space. Workspace artists for the 2012 season have been selected. The 2013 artists will be identified in September 2012.
generated@wavehill: An artist is invited to create a temporal project on the grounds that is inspired by Wave Hill. For 2013-14, Wave Hill will invite artists to create site-related sound and audio projects on the grounds.
Van Lier Visual Artist Fellowship Application deadline for 2012 has passed; new guidelines will be posted in the fall of 2012.
This one-year artist fellowship is open to New York City-based artists, who are 30 years of age or younger and are not currently enrolled in a degree-granting program. The fellowship provides emerging artists from culturally diverse backgrounds valuable mentorship opportunities, including learning from the curatorial staff about the creation and interpretation of exhibitions and arts programming, as well as working with artists and arts professionals to define career paths over the course of the program (January through December). Van Lier Fellows will be given a studio during the Winter Workspace Program and will receive a commission to create a solo project in the Sunroom Project Space.
