Mouse, Wave Hill Menagerie, 2002

detail

Alexandra Sax exhibits the new Wave Hill installment of her ongoing Menagerie Recovery Project. These small-scale, papier-mâche animal sculptures are intricately detailed and textured with feathers, fabric, and fur. The Wave Hill House reception area is populated with a group of enigmatic creatures poised on architectural fragments. They seem to possess life-like qualities and personalities, in fact some contain motors and music boxes. Begun in 1997, the Menagerie Recovery Project was inspired by the writings and work of naturalist Gerald Durrell. It includes the Winter Walk Menagerie, the Willard Stein Menagerie, the Wilma Rose Menagerie and the Royal Court Menagerie.
