| Amy Chan assembles obscure references to the built, natural and historic landscape of Riverdale, Yonkers and beyond to explore her interest in Wave Hill’s location on the cusp of city and suburbs. Upon close examination, the viewer may detect foliage and trees loosely interpreting Wave Hill’s winter vegetation. In the elegant entrance foyer, the floating placement of homes and landforms is inspired by toile wallpaper motifs. Rather than crowding the featured sites with embellishment, the imagery breathes when surrounded by white space. Using decorative painting techniques, Chan employs a deadpan style and a muted palate to render these familiar places in a documentary rather than decorative manner. She began this project by photographing the environs, then translated selected photos to loose, enlarged drawings. The photos and drawings were used as a guide to paint directly on the wall. The project was completed over the course of five weeks on site.
Amy Chan has exhibited at Artists Space, New York, NY and at the Bronx Museum of the Arts through the Artists in the Marketplace program. She worked in-residence at Jentel Foundation Residency in Banner, WY and has an upcoming residency at Evergreen House, John Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD.
