Cassandra James’ fascination with extreme weather conditions originated with a childhood fear of the coming storm. Her oil paintings celebrate the paradoxical beauty of turbulent thunderstorms, waterspouts, tornados and cumulus clouds. In Table Mountain I, II, III, the force of nature is transcendent and spectacular. The triptych summons the shifting color, light, and rapid movement of the wind, focusing on the action of constantly changing storm. In this weather, the definition between sky and land is indistinct, and the landscape is enveloped by the atmosphere.
Cassandra James has exhibited widely with solo exhibitions at Clayton Galleries, Tampa, FL; Flatbed Press, Austin, TX; and Munson Gallery, Santa Fe, NM. Her paintings were included in Terrestrial Forces at the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts, Tallahassee, FL, in 2004. This is the first time her work has been shown in New York. She teaches at Penland School, Penland, NC; Ringling School of Art & Design, Sarasota, FL; and Austin Museum Art School, Austin, TX. |
