Using sumi ink wash as her medium, Emily Brown investigates the play of light on the
leaves and branches of trees. By combining ink and water as she works on watercolor
paper, she is able to achieve a broad range of textures. Her brushstrokes have an almost
calligraphic fluidity, allowing thin washes to seep into murky pools of ink in order to
convey the depth and density of a wooded area. Here, she has created three works on
paper that fit within the panels of the walls of the north gallery. A pair of drawings flanking the doorway feature a long grouping of conifers standing north of Wave Hill House. A third, smaller work is drawn from a grove in the woods below Glyndor House. The conifers shown here offer up a singular intricacy of form, which Brown ably explores
with her arrestingly varied style of mark-making. These works continue her interest in
working with ink to render natural landscapes, an approach she has been pursuing for
over ten years.
