Now entering its fifth season, the Sunroom Project Space in Glyndor Gallery at Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center in the Bronx, commissions emerging New York-area artists to create a new body of work or site-specific project as a solo exhibition in the space. For 2011, a jury review considered over 100 applications and ultimately selected: Meghan Gordon, Claudia Weber, The Friendly Falcons and Their Friend the Snake (artists Jeffrey Kurosaki and Tara Pelletier), Caitlin Parker and Sreshta Rit Premnath. These six join the growing list of artists who have found inspiration in Wave Hill’s rich history, sweeping vistas and breathtaking garden, creating and exhibiting new work within a context unique to New York City.

The Sunroom Project Space provides a significant contribution to each selected artist’s professional advancement. Throughout the process, artists are supported by Wave Hill’s dedicated curatorial staff, are given access to the grounds and encouraged to engage with the visiting public.  Daniel Bruce, a 2010 Sunroom Project Space artist, captures the mission of the program as he reflects, “Wave Hill provided a perfect platform which gave me the opportunity to put into play a fully realized installation… The levels of respect and professionalism that I received from Wave Hill's unshakable mission was wonderful.”

This season’s artists play upon the unique aspects of the transitions between interior and exterior spaces at Wave Hill, and the relationship between the natural and human-made. Artists act as innovative architects, extending their inspiration beyond the indoor space to create immersive installations, using a variety of techniques such as found sounds, photographs and sculptural assemblage.

The Sunroom Project Space series is supported in part by the Milton & Sally Avery Arts Foundation and The New York Community Trust. Additional support for the Visual Arts Program is provided by the Lily Auchincloss Foundation, Inc., the Dedalus Foundation, Inc., and with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Sustaining support for Wave Hill is provided by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
