Morgan Puett
J.
Morgan Puett is known for an interdisciplinary approach to art,
combining traditional artistry with architecture and fashion, and
frequently collaborating with others. She has had many projects
over the past 20 years that incorporate a sense of space and a desire
to recreate a southern rural element in more urban settings.
Puett
grew up in rural Georgia. She moved to New York City after
receiving both a BFA and an MFA from The School of the Art Institute
of Chicago. Many of Puett’s projects concern her interest
in the use of space and environment, as well as clothing, two ideas
that are brought together in this installation. Previous works
include The Manhattan Tartan Project, a project with Suzanne
Bocanegra in which they designed new tartans to represent the population
of New York, with different plaids representing different neighborhoods
in the city. The Ladies Field Club of York, a collaboration
with Mark Dion, was most recently on display at the Christine Burgin
Gallery in New York. Puett’s most recent work, Cottage Industry,
was exhibited as part of the Spoleto festival in Charleston, SC.
For this project, she created a woman’s multi-part outfit, in the
process, wove a garment that spoke of social history, the history
of women’s work at home and the realities of textile industry.
