Janet
Zweig takes a poetic view on the concept of cycling
and recycling. For this artwork she adapted a flip sign
mechanism from an Italian manufacturer. The male figure
circles back and forth in an empty space. The figures
on the right are taken from a flip book that Zweig made
many years ago, one woman removes the dress and tosses
it to her double who puts the dress on, the same dress
re-appears on the first woman. The ballet is triggered
by the visitor’s movement in the room. This repetitive
movement and exchange is similar to the actions performed
in recycling.
Janet Zweig employed a similar flip sign mechanism in
Impersonator, 2002, a sentence generating flip-sign
for the Instructional Technology Center, Santa Fe Community
College, Santa Fe, NM. One of her first public art projects,
Your Voices was installed at Walton High School in the
Bronx in 1997. Her project for the Prince Street N/R
Subway Station will be installed later this year. Her
work has been exhibited widely including the Brooklyn,
Museum, Exit Art, and PS1. More information about Janet
Zweig can be found at www.janetzweig.com. |
