The Beguiling Pulse
March 5 - May 30, 2005
Jeffrey Gibson
The Beguiling Pulse, 2005
detail

The Beguiling Pulse expands on Jeffrey Gibson’s recent paintings that depict an untamed, exotic wilderness of deviant forms mimicking patterns of growth found in nature. He incorporates cast plastic forms, oil and acrylic paint, pigmented silicone and mixed-media to create an effusive, delightful, iridescent landscape that swirls forth from under the spiral staircase. Working over the course of several weeks he built up the lush painted surface on-site, absorbing the sights and sounds of Wave Hill. At the same time, he created the multiple, cast plastic forms in the studio. These were applied to the wall and integrated into the composition with pigmented silicone. Influenced by ethnographic museums and modern and contemporary landscape paintings, Gibson is an explorer of a new wilderness that he transposes into an experiential installation through collected objects and observations of plant life.

Jeffrey Gibson recently received a Creative Capital Grant. His work has been exhibited at the Jersey City Museum, Jersey City, NJ; Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, Newark, NJ; the Morris Museum, Morristown, NJ; the Bronx Museum of the Arts; and Samson Projects, Boston MA. This summer he will exhibit at the American Indian Community House, New York, NY.
