Joan Linder

Insomnia , 2005

detail

The Glyndor sunroom is formed by three pairs of arched windows. The eastern windows are sheltered by the adjacent Ilex opaca (American Holly), the southern windows look out on the sloping lawn that gives the room its perching position, and the western windows look into the adjacent sun porch. To the northern wall, Joan Linder has added a complimentary seventh window with a view to the night sky. The life-size pen and ink drawing is rendered in personalized detail. Working from direct observation, photography, sketching and note taking, nothing is too banal or insignificant to escape her gaze. Bringing the results of her reconnaissance back to the studio, Linder works in the unforgivable medium of pen and ink to create a drawing that completes the room. The references to the moon allude to the passage of time during which the drawing inhabits the space. This site-based project brings together Linder’s interest in landscape and architecture.

Joan Linder also explores gender and power issues in drawings which were exhibited this year at Samson Projects, Boston MA, and the Erotic Drawing exhibition at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT. She created a wall drawing for the exhibition 637 Running Feet, Black and White Wall Drawings, Queens Museum of Art in 2003. Her work has been shown regularly in New York with solo exhibitions at Mixed Greens, 2004, and White Columns, 2003. She has won awards that include a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant, The Ronnie Heyman Prize from the National Foundation for Jewish Culture, and residencies fellowships at Art Omi, the MacDowell Colony, Villa Montalvo, and Yaddo. She teaches at the University of Buffalo, and earned her MFA from Columbia University and her BFA from Tufts University. For more information visit www.mixedgreens.com.
