Karl Unnasch
Domestic Disturbances, 2004

The sculpture of Karl Unnasch illustrates the harsh beauty where natural and human-made worlds collide. He demonstrates this relationship by juxtaposing desire and repulsion. Evident in his synthetic miniature landscapes such as Domestic Disturbances, he reconditions an abandoned stove to create a vignette of surreal contemplation. Salvaged objects and a dead skunk are selected as the foundations for his pieces. The fantastic setting examines the notion of beauty and the unpleasant realities of death. Visitor’s come upon the stove as they walk along the woodland path.

In addition to Enchantment, Karl Unnasch’s work is currently on view in Move, Rochester Art Center, Rochester, MN (through June). Other 2004 exhibitions include Urban Vignettes, The Artists Foundation, Boston, MA; Tactical Interventions, MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA, and For the Birds, Artspace, New Haven, CT. He has participated in artist-in-residency programs and been awarded several grants.
