Kevin Todd is interested in the ways Western science and art provide a framework to understand the natural world. He works extensively with computer models to generate images that describe and give structure to what is seen or experienced in nature. Todd uses the abstraction of the computer and the media film and glass, to present what previously would have been conveyed romantically with a paintbrush and canvas. In this work, Todd cautions that the rationalism of science can lead to a functional relationship with the natural world that dominates over other valid connections. In the Visitor Center, the transparent images are adhered to the three windows, with panes left empty to see to the landscape beyond. The appearance and quality of the images will change in different light and weather conditions.
This is the first time Kevin Todd’s work has been exhibited in the United States. In Australia, he has had solo exhibitions at the Brisbane City Gallery, Queensland; The Australian Museum, Sydney; the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne. He has also shown in the United Kingdom, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Singapore. He is actively involved in public art. Among his permanent commissions are projects at the Western Districts Courthouse, Inala, Queensland; Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane; and Futures Technology Centre, Hobart, Tasmania.
