| With fog and rubber, Matthew Geller augments the existing, and perhaps never quite completed terrace adjacent to the lower lawn, creating a mix of romance and mayhem often associated with the weather. Located in an area that can be hot and uncomfortable during the summer, the platform is perched on the roof of the ecology building (formerly the estate’s recreation area), enclosed by a muscular balustrade. Whether or not you love me introduces traces of activity, a chair, oddly colored puddles, and of course the intermittent fog, making an awkward site potentially habitable. The density of fog and the temperature will change depending on the weather, offering respite from the heat.
Previously, Geller has used these materials in Failing to see shelter, they… (1999) at the Witte de With in Rotterdam, and in Foggy Day (2003), created for Cortlandt Alley in lower Manhattan, a project of the Creative Capital Foundation with fiscal sponsorship from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. His installations, sculpture and videos have been exhibited widely including Arthouse, Austin TX; Summer Palace Garden, Dϋsseldorf, Germany; the Long Island Children’s Museum, Garden City, NY; Hans Knoll Gallery, Budapest; Hungary, Kunst Kanaal, Amsterdam, Netherlands; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY.
