Michael Eade’s hybrid Serapis is drawn from the Egypto-Hellenistic god with three faces who was associated with the passage of time – the left facing wolf suggests the time passed, the right facing dog anticipates the future and the lion gazing straight ahead symbolizes the present. Several clues suggest that the Serapis dwell in the vicinity of Wave Hill. The distant Palisades can be seen in left corner of the central painting; the pond is fed by the Hudson River and is filled with plants that can be found in Wave Hill’s Aquatic Garden. But more likely, the Serapis dwells in a parallel hybrid world, one with different natural laws.
