Milton Rosa-Ortiz

Pond, 2008 detail

Milton Rosa-Ortiz inverts the experience of the sun porch by floating a vibrant blood-red form that suggests a flower in the middle of an overhead pond with crystal-clear ice shards. Light streams through the skylights and windows, while the suspended sculpture evokes the sensation of being underwater. The flower, made up of numerous red beads, appears to be very three-dimensional and desirable. The futility of perfection is addressed by including a small number of elements that are not quite the right color. Rosa-Ortiz has dealt with ideas of paradise and desire in other works, most recently in The Seven Deadly Sins and Paradise According to Milton where his Eve, made of red beads, is modeled on Marilyn Monroe, and Adam, made of blue beads, is modeled on James Dean.

Milton Rosa-Ortiz has a solo exhibition this summer at Baldwin Gallery in Aspen, CO. He has also had solo exhibitions at Magnan Projects, New York, NY; Cornell DeWitt Gallery, New York, NY; and Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, San Juan, PR. His work has been included in many group exhibitions including Sugar Buzz, Lehman College Art Gallery, Bronx, NY; Bearable Lightness . . . Likeness, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, NY; The (S) Files Bienal, El Museo del Barrio, New York, NY; and HomoMuseum and L-Factor, both at Exit Art, New York, NY. He has completed a number of commissions for private collectors in New York, San Diego, and Aspen. He has worked as both an architect and an art director, but now concentrates entirely on his own artwork. He earned his BA in architecture at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS, and studied at Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass Village, CO.
