Propagating Eden: Uses and Techniques of Nature Printing in Botany and Art

Wave Hill hosts the expanded version of this exhibition, organized by the International Print Center New York, which explores the ways in which nature prints have been used in botany, numismatics and art, and the technical means by which printmakers have captured faithful impresses. Dating from the mid-18th century to the present, the works in Propagating Eden include important scientific botanical treatises illustrated with nature-printed specimens, as well as works by 20th century and contemporary artists who have mined the potential of natural forms.

Winter Workspace Program

While Glyndor Gallery is closed this winter, it will be transformed into an artist workspace for seven visual artists to develop new work or pursue a particular project using Wave Hill’s exceptional garden and woodland settings as a source conductive to the creative process. With a winter focus on the Hudson River, the artists will engage with ideas about the river. The artists selected include Susan Benarcik, Liz Burrow, Kent Henricksen , Robyn Love, Rita MacDonald, Eve Mosher and Anne-Katrin Spiess.

On display at Wave Hill House are over 40 hats created by Wave Hill visitors as part of Robyn Love’s project. Twice a week in January and February, Robyn opened her Winter Workspace studio to the public to card, spin, and knit wool that Robyn dyed using natural materials. 50 skeins were created and given to visitors to knit or felt a hat that would be exhibited here.

Working on-site during her residency at Wave Hill this winter, Rita MacDonald developed a project that explores her interest in decorative patterning. This wall-paper based installation uses repetition and optical illusion to disorient the viewer and heighten the visual experience of the space.

Wave Hill and The Drawing Center co-host a day of drawing activities for all ages, led by artists Pat Steir and Jason Middlebrook. Use drawing as a chance to slow down and relate to your city and community in a different way. Two sessions will take place. All ages welcome. Free with admission to the grounds.

On view in Wave Hill House are two Wave Hill Topography Quilts created by last year’s Winter Workspace artist, Liz Burow. Volunteers were invited to felt wool and the public attended a Quilting Bee where they stitched a design that featured part of Wave Hill’s topography from the pergola to the river onto the felted blanket.
