Paul Etienne Lincoln

Passage to Purification 2002
Courtesy of Alexander and Bonin Gallery,

New York, NY

The complex, elaborate works by Paul Etienne Lincoln can take as long as a decade to create and explore diverse themes in nature, history and ancient mythology. The objects selected here represent his project Borosilicate Still for the Purification of Fagus Sylvatica, which originated with a beech tree in Queens, NY. A small version of the Distillate Still is included in the vitrine and the still photographs and film document the purification. In using Fagus sylvatica var pendula, which refers to the Latin classification for the European hanging beech tree, and Merope, one of the Seven Daughters of Atlas and Pleione, he ties together nature and mythology.

Paul Etienne Lincoln has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions here and abroad. Recent exhibitions include Paul Etienne Lincoln: Preludes, Alexander and Bonin, New York, NY (2004) and Die Berliner Zuckerbärin, Museum Folkwang at RWE Tower, Essen, Germany (2003). His writings include Equestrian Opulators at the House of Approximate Odds. More information at www.alexanderandbonin.com/artists/lincoln/lincoln.html
