 Pedro Cruz-Castro

Reclamation, 2006-07

detail

Blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, the sunroom provides the perfect setting for Pedro Cruz-Castro’s project, Reclamation, which includes two wood sculptures, a table and a grandfather clock. These sculptures act as a metaphor for the interaction between natural and man-made environments. The table, rustic and simple, is constructed from wood, natural branches and sections of a maple tree. Cruz-Castro breaks down a grandfather clock, restructuring and transforming it, uniting it with the London Plane tree. His exploration of the ambiguity of the structures thus created poses questions about which came first: Have the trees taken root over time in the sunroom, growing up into the furniture, or has the furniture begun to grow roots and branches? The Sunroom Project Space offers Cruz-Castro an opportunity to create site-specific work in a unique setting.

Pedro Cruz-Castro will be participating with the collective Across The Bridge at Tacoma Contemporary, Tacoma, WA, in November 2007. His solo exhibitions include Embody, Cave Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Pedro Cruz-Castro, New York Public Library, Yorkville Branch, NY; and Lo que descubran tus ojos, Tabaco Bar, Caracas, Venezuela. His group exhibitions include AIM 26, The Bronx Museum of Arts, Bronx, NY; Venezueland, Galeria Galou, Brooklyn, NY; FACE_OFF, Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, New York, NY; “Planet Magazine”, collaboration Lot61, New York, NY; and NEO New Approaches to Art Making, Exit Art, New York, NY. Cruz-Castro gained international exposure with shows in Caracas, Venezuela, as well as at Werketage in Berlin, Germany. His awards include Aljira – Emerge 2001 – Artists Development Program, a “Change” Grant from the Rauschenberg Foundation, and a Merit Loan from The Art Students League of New York. Since 1996, Cruz-Castro has worked as a preparator at many well-known galleries and museums in New York. He earned his BA in graphic design from Jose Maria Vargas University, Caracas, Venezuela, and has studied at The Art Students League of New York, and the National Art Gallery and School of Visual Arts “Cristobol Rojas”, both in Caracas, Venezuela.
