Recollection, Peggy Diggs has assembled hundreds of
glass jars holding objects collected during a lifetime.
The printed label refers to how these objects were
important to the person. The sign PLEASE ORGANIZE
invites visitors to manipulate the jars and participate
in their arrangement. The simple act of holding and
turning the jar connects the visitor to that person.
The project poses questions about people’s relationship
to the things that they use and collect. Together
these fragments compose a family portrait.
Peggy Diggs has collaborated with many different communities
on interactive public art throughout the country.
These projects tackle a wide range of subjects. Finding
Home, 2003, was a banner project with Deborah’s
Place, a Chicago organization that serves homeless
women. MakeDo addresses poverty, simple living and
making do with less as a positive way of life. It
is exhibited in Borne of Necessity at the Weatherspoon
Art Museum, University of North Carolina in Greensboro,
NC. For more information about her work visit www.williams.edu/~pdiggs
