Rima

Mardoyan-Smyth

Turbulence Blue, 2003-04
detail

Agitated weather, social conditions and emotions are a source for Rima Mardoyan-Smyth’s encaustic paintings. Using molten beeswax mixed with resin and pigments, the medium is extremely difficult to control, especially on a large scale. Her process involves heating the wax to 350 degrees and working the surface to create the depth and motion evidenced in each painting. The process itself is well suited to the turbulent imagery. The luminous atmosphere conjures emotions associated with extreme weather.

Rima Mardoyan-Smyth had worked in encaustic for many years. She had a solo exhibition at Axel Raben Gallery, New York, NY; Anne Katz Gallery, Frankfurt, Germany; and Sara Nightingale Gallery, Watermill, NY. Her work has also been exhibited at Butler Fine Arts, East Hampton, NY; Green Barn, Sagaponack, NY; Guild Hall Museum, East Hampton, NY; and and Lizan-Tops Gallery, East Hampton, NY. Her work is represented in private and corporate collections.
