Robert Lobe’s sculptures Rocky High and Sunstream are located on the terrace lawn where they can be seen in relationship to Wave Hill’s Abrons Woodland and the Hudson River beyond. Hammered anodized aluminum tree fragments are abstracted to underscore the balance of nature. Lobe pounds sheets of aluminum over dead trees and rocks, creating an articulated surface that appears to be bark from a distance, but resembles molten metal at close range. The sculptures are based on a situation found in nature but are freely composed.

Lobe had a solo exhibition in 1997 at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ, and has also shown in a number of group exhibitions, one of which was at Wave Hill in 1979, entitled, Wave Hill, the Artist’s View. Lobe has received two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, an Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant, and a Pollack-Krasner Foundation Award. He has completed permanent commissions for Lanmeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis, MO, and the U.S. Geological Survey Building in Reston, VA through the General Services Administration. He received his B.A. from Oberlin College, OH.
