Sarah Hollis Perry
At Home, 2000
chair, ottoman, New York Times home delivery bags
28” x 36” x 52”
Sarah Hollis Perry employs handiwork skills associated with women’s work – weaving, knitting, and sewing. These were among the original recycling skills in earlier households where clothes would be reconstructed inside out, refreshed or re-sized for younger family members, and rugs would be made from scraps of fabric and rags no longer of other household use. In the armchair fashioned from New York Times home delivery bags, subscribers will immediately associate with the annoying problem of what to do with an abundant supply of bags. Perry’s chair is a reminder that earlier generations found multiple uses for most everything that came into the home.

Sarah Hollis Perry has exhibited at the Mobius Gallery, Boston, MA, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA Olin Arts Center, Farmington, CT, and the Hammond Museum, North Salem, NY, among other places. This is her first time exhibiting in New York. Prior to concentrating on her artwork, she was a research scientist and photographer for the Polaroid Corporation.
