Finding Home #40
March 1 - May 11, 2003
Siona Benjamin

Finding Home #40,

Curry-Oke, 2000
detail

In Siona Benjamina's Finding Home series, the hybrid women mix up seemingly incongruous cultural icons. Benjamin explores the relative permeability of cultural membranes by drawing on her own experiences of home and migration as a Bene Israel Jew who was raised in India, but now lives in America. The ornate and intricate visual language of her spiritual sources -- Tantric art of ancient India, Indian miniature paintings, Byzantine icons and Jewish religious art -- resonates in these paintings. In this series, the women possess an inner power and strength, and a strong relationship to rituals, all with an underlying humor. More information at www.artsiona.com.
