Spencer Finch

Jetstream (forecast for 10.5 days ahead), 2000

detail

Interested in the psychological and physiological aspects of perception, Spencer Finch explores aspects of the weather in two drawings. Index of Wind lists the names of 437 different types of wind, written in a faintly discernable hand. The wind appears to be a whisper in this white-on-white drawing. A version of Index of the Wind appeared in the Summer 2001 issue of Cabinet, which was devoted to weather. Lively colored lines moving across the paper in Jetstream (forecast for 10.5 days ahead), seem to signal a view of prediction.

Spencer Finch’s work has been exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at Postmasters Gallery, New York, NY; Portikus, Frankfurt, Germany; Brändström-Stene Galleri, Stockholm, Sweden; Artpace, San Antonio, TX; the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, CT; and numerous group exhibitions including the 2004 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY. He collaborated with William Forsythe on the lighting for Three Atmospheric Studies, performed in Frankfurt, Germany in April, 2005. More information at www.spencerfinch.com
