In DEvalue/REvalue,
Steve Bradley explores what happens to materials that
do not just “go away,” the consumer detritus
that fill the landscape. For this project, Bradley worked
with students from the Gateway Academy for Science,
Mathematics and Research at JFK High School in the Bronx.
They took several walks to collect and compare trash
from the commercial areas near their school with the
residential area near Wave Hill. The findings were cleaned,
catalogued and organized by Bradley in his studio. Installed
in the gallery, what was once trash possesses a new
value. Some objects are offered for sale to gallery
visitors, which further expands the value and purpose.
Steve Bradley is a trans-media artist who works in many
media while consistently addressing the “dichotomy
of desire and discard within the material culture.”
His collecting has taken him to the banks of the River
Hull, in Hull, England, Malham Cove Clifts at the Yorkshire
Dales National Park, Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and now the
Bronx. He travels and performs frequently with art@radio,
a project based on the campus of the University of Maryland,
in Baltimore, MD. For more information about these and
other projects, visit http://www.research.umbc.edu/~sbradley/ |
