Crotona Park (baseball field) Bronx, 2008 detail

Steven Day

Crotona Park (baseball field) Bronx, 2008,
detail

For this exhibition Steven Day explored Crotona Park and Memorial Park in the urban heart of the Bronx. He took photographs in April prior to the burst of spring, juxtaposing daily life and recreation with the unexpected proximity to nature. Here he forefronts what might be considered “taken for granted” nature with the adjacent housing projects as the backdrop. In these new photographs, created for Surprisingly Natural, the lawns, trees and rock outcroppings could be perceived as a protective moat surrounding the apartment building. In other series he has focused on overlooked architecture such as the Bridge Apartments built on top of I-95, adjacent to the George Washington Bridge, and an abandoned 19th-century hospital on Central Park West.

In his parallel photography and painting practices, Steven Day is concerned with the urban environment and global and economic changes. His paintings and photographs have been exhibited widely in venues such as Haines Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Hewitt Gallery of Marymount Manhattan College, New York, NY; Michael Steinberg Gallery, New York, NY; and Charlotte Jackson Gallery, Santa Fe, NM. His work was included in Emergency Room, which originated at PS1/MoMA, Long Island City, NY, and traveled to I Palazzo delle Arti Napoli, Naples, Italy, and Taïss Gallery, Paris France. His work can be found in the Pierogi Flat Files in Brooklyn, NY. He earned his MFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute, and his BS from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
