Stephen
Siegel’s interest in geology and landforms led
him to create layered sculptures that use vast amounts
of newspaper, cans or materials otherwise headed to
the recycling center. At first glance, these objects
in the landscape appear connected to the environment
and natural processes, and thus convey a sense of timelessness.
Closer examination reveals that they are made from accumulated
waste. The sculptures will remain in place until they
deteriorate. Carbon #1 is a sculpture from a series
of works that appear to be extractions from products
that will not easily deteriorate.
Siegel has created over 40 large-scale outdoor site
works since 1992, in sculpture gardens, university campuses,
and museums. He has exhibited widely including solo
exhibitions at the Abington Art Center, Jenkintown,
PA, Davis and Hall Gallery, Hudson, NY, 125 Maiden Lane,
New York, NY, and at Wave Hill in 1988. More information
about his work can be found at www.stevensiegel.net. |
