Todd Martin was drawn to Split Rock, a glacial boulder which today is isolated between the intersection of the Hutchinson River Parkway and the New England Thruway (I-95.) His photographs convey its improbable survival and contrast this isolated patch of nature with the velocity of the traffic. According to legend the site served as a lookout for the Siwanoy tribe, and was near the home of Anne Hutchinson, who along with her family, was killed during the brutal Indian Wars. The Battle of Pelham during the Revolutionary War took place alongside the rock. A bronze plaque honoring its history dedicated by the Colonial Dames is long gone, however the rock remains as a significant marker of the past. On view in Wave Hill House are photographs from his forays into Pelham Bay Park that capture the rugged shoreline, a reminder that New York’s shoreline has the same qualities as the states to the north.
