Ulrike Heydenreich

Lily Tree, 2004

detail

From May through July 2004 Ulrike Heydenreich regularly visited Wave Hill with her Panorama Drawing Device, to create panorama drawings that offer a unique interpretation of this environment. Three of the Wave Hill drawings plus the device are exhibited here. Both a sculpture and a tool, the device appears very useful, but how and for what specific purpose? The portable device is easily assembled and can be wheeled into the desired location. Standing on the elevated platform that allows for a fresh perspective, the artist is surrounded by the drawing board positioned at shoulder level to frame the 360-degree view. Heydenreich’s interest in cartography and developing ways to see specific places led the creation of the device. In seeking shade from the hot sun, she found that the drawings took greater form when she began to use the foliage in the foreground and allude to the larger panorama presented by the spectacular scenery here.

Ulrike Heydenreich has a concurrent solo exhibition at Thomas Barry Fine Arts, Minneapolis, MN. Her work has also been exhibited at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx, NY; Dorsky Gallery, Long Island City, NY; the Visual Arts Gallery, New York, NY; and Fusebox Gallery, Washington, DC. She has participated in residencies at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, New Smyrna Beach, FL; and the Sculpture Space, Utica, NY. More information at www.ulrikeheydenreich.com
