| Vargas-Suarez Universal works from nature and architecture, with biology, medicine, space, or astronomy as sources. For this project he considered plants in relationship to the global greenhouse effect. He began by looking at photographs of trees and shrubs from Wave Hill’s collection. In particular, the spaces between the branches are the reference point for the first ink marks that he draws continuously on all the walls. Even though the original images are so different, his approach results in a consistent density throughout the room. Next he applies the dark green paint throughout, moving on to the lighter green. There is a performative aspect to his process that is generated from the site in terms of subject, yet the colors were in fact chosen from leftover paint in the storage closet. In this domestic setting, he also considered Victorian wallpaper, with the result being a dynamic experience of a panorama in motion.
Vargas-Suarez Universal exhibits paintings, drawings, photographs and wall drawings in many locations including g-module, Paris, France; the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, NY; Thomas Erben Gallery, New York, NY; Jersey City Museum, Jersey City, NJ; Art Basel, Miami Beach, FL; Galeria Carlos Irizarry, San Juan, PR; Galeria Ramis Barquet, Monterrey, Mexico.
