Wave Hill's inquiry-based workshops provide educators with innovative and effective ways to connect the natural world to classroom learning, and provide multiple entry points for different types of learners.

Wave Hill staff work with you to create a program specifically tailored to your teachers. The following broad topics are available, and all can incorporate cross-curricular elements. The Outdoor Classroom
Our way of welcoming you to Wave Hill, free of charge! Learn ways to use the grounds of Wave Hill as an extension of classroom learning. Explore strategies for environmental education to develop realistic and effective practices for teaching science and other curricular areas.

Connecting Nature and Art: A MoMA and Wave Hill Collaborative Program for Teachers
Join educators from the Museum of Modern Art and Wave Hill for two, half-day workshops that explore the rich connections between nature and art. Through up-close observation and hands-on activities, teachers investigate how nature has influenced and inspired artists, exploring the similarities between different inquiry-based approaches to creating art and interpreting natural phenomena.

Listening and Seeing: Nature, Childhood and the Senses of our Imagining
Richard Lewis, Founder and Director of The Touchstone Center for Children, leads this afternoon workshop focusing on the sensory qualities of listening and seeing, exploring how educators can deepen these experiences through writing and art.

A Seed, A Leaf, A Pebble: Explorations of Worlds within Worlds
Richard Lewis leads this afternoon workshop exploring the ways educators can tap into children’s fascination with things small and secretive. Through discussion, reflection and art activities, this program focuses on the imaginative realms of thought and expression.

Inside and Outside: Childhood, the Natural World and the Play of Imagining
This course is available for 1 graduate credit through the City College of New York. Richard Lewis leads four, two-and-a-half- hour sessions indoors at CCNY, culminating in one, full-day session held outdoors at Wave Hill. The course looks at the role and use of imagination as a means of discovering, understanding and experiencing nature. Each session, new discoveries and insights help participants deepen their own teaching and learning.
