Gyun Hur, "I wouldn't know any other way", 2020. Hand-shredded silk flowers, vinyl print, and mirror. Installation view in Death Becomes Her at BRIC | Brooklyn, New York. Courtesy of the artist. Photo by David Andrako.

Gyun Hur’s So we can be near is a landscape she has composed from her memories of loss and beauty. This installation visualizes histories that are personal, familial and intimately shared. Under soft, yellow light, etched mirrors line the edges of the Sunroom to open up the space for reflection and introspection. Within the mirrored space of the Sunroom, Hur has gently placed a large, vinyl print on the floor. Comprised of personal photos, the print is covered with thousands of hand-shredded, yellow-silk flowers that obscure parts of the vinyl. By both blurring and revealing aspects of these personal images, the artist imagines an elusive terrain where her psyche dwells in an impossible yearning to be with her beloved.

This is Gyun Hur’s first solo exhibition in New York. She has had solo and two-person shows at Pullman Historic District, in Chicago, IL; and SCAD Gallery Central, in Hong Kong. Recent group exhibitions have been held at BRIC, Brooklyn, NY; Dillon + Lee, New York, NY; The High Museum of Art and Hudgens Center for the Arts, Atlanta, GA. Hur has performed and exhibited in Canada, China, Hong Kong, Italy, Turkey and the United States.
