Update on Spring 2024

We are excited to welcome students back to the gardens! We are offering a limited number of in-person programs. For classes unable to visit in person, select programs have a 45-minute, virtual option ($100; 20% discount for Title I and D75 schools).

Amazing Mammals

Seasons offered: Virtual only

Get a behind-the-scenes look at urban wildlife while discovering ecology, animal adaptations and the mammals of the New York metropolitan region. After learning about key differences between various local mammals and their unique adaptations, students explore their woodland habitat and analyze data from camera traps to see what kinds of mammalian visitors call Wave Hill home.

Avian Adventures

Seasons offered: Spring at Wave Hill

In this dynamic program, students go birdwatching, using binoculars to closely observe birds’ traits and behaviors. Students will learn about the meanings behind bird calls through imitation. A hands-on investigation of feathers and skulls will help them discover how different adaptations allow birds to thrive in their special niches.

Native Knowledge

Seasons offered: Spring at Wave Hill

Students look to local indigenous cultures to build community with plants. Participants act as multi-sensory observers, seeing herbs for their beauty, utility and diversity. They deepen their understanding through an interactive exploration of the oral tradition of storytelling and a walk in the gardens and woodlands to meet plants utilized by the Lenape.

Seeds We Need

Seasons offered: Spring at Wave Hill; virtual

Students embody the way seeds adapt and work together to survive and find a home. A walk through the grounds sparks curiosity regarding seeds’ diverse sizes, shapes, textures and mechanisms for travel. Students meet three different seeds before going on a collection walk—a chance to apply their new knowledge.

Totally Trees

Seasons offered: Spring at Wave Hill

Through observation and inquiry, students are introduced to some of Wave Hill’s treasured trees. They learn about tree anatomy, the role each part plays in a tree’s life cycle and the services that trees provide to other members of their ecosystems. Based on their observations and the lessons they learn, students embody trees during body movement and mindfulness activities throughout the program.

Walk for the Senses

Seasons offered: Spring at Wave Hill

This program invites budding scientists to grow their observation skills by tuning into their senses as they tour the gardens and grounds. School groups discover how each new sight, sound, smell and texture is a clue to understanding our universe. Students exercise their sensory skills through using magnifying glasses, going on an herb garden exploration and more.

Dig Into Decomposers

Seasons offered: Spring at Wave Hill

Have you ever wondered what lives below your feet? Prepare to find out during this program by exploring the vital role of decomposers in Wave Hill's woodlands and discover how these organisms impact life and waste cycles in NYC. By developing an understanding of the habitat and lives of insects, fungi and worms, students will gain confidence in their knowledge of the local ecosystem.
