Sunset Wednesdays: Live Music on the Great Lawn‒Aurora & Zon del Barrio
On the Grounds
Aurora & Zon del Barrio, featuring Fania All-Star Nicky Marrero, brings its classic Afro-Boricua foot-stomping, funk-based classic salsa, plena, merengue, bomba and boogalu to the corners of the barrios where Latinos live, work and play. Creative and musically diverse in taste while resourceful in survival, Latinos from the barrio zones have sophisticated tastes in music that are not relegated to one particular genre. Zon del Barrio emerges as one of the few orchestras to express the varied genres of Latin music from the African Diaspora and the urban streets of New York. This group of veteran and young musicians is led by music journalist and historian Aurora Flores, with musical direction provided by David Fernandez, a multi-instrumentalist who refers to his almost encyclopedic knowledge of the classics for his creative arrangements. Joining this group is virtuoso pianist and arranger Antoine Alvear, and the charismatic timbalero percussionist and Fania All-Star Nicky Marrero.
Beginning at 4PM on Sunset Wednesdays, admission to the grounds is $12 adults, $8 students and seniors 65+. Free to Wave Hill Members and children under six. No guest passes or reciprocal admission accepted. The grounds are open until 8:30PM.
