Winter Workspace Workshop: Basketry, Functional and Wearable Art
Each winter, Wave Hill opens Glyndor Gallery as workspace for New York-area artists, giving them the unique opportunity to explore the winter landscape as a source of inspiration. Artists share aspects of their practice and engagement with Wave Hill through hands-on workshops. Workshops begin in Glyndor Gallery with an introduction to the artist’s work, then continue in the Ecology Building or Wave Hill House for the creative activity.
Sarah Zapata plans to continue sewing arpilleras (wall hangings traditionally made by women) to address savage abuses of human rights in Peru and Chile during times of guerilla occupation. Using fibers and native grasses, participants fabricate wearable or decorative baskets while exploring traditional, as well as modern, South American cultures. Visitors aged 12 and over are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Newcomers and practicing artists alike are welcome.
$25/$15 Wave Hill Members, includes admission to the grounds. Unless otherwise noted, art materials are provided. Advance registration recommended; Winter Workspace Workshops fill up quickly.
