Managing a Broad Range of Learning Opportunities

Led by its Director, the Education Department provides educational programs for school-aged children from pre-school through high school, professional development for teachers and teachers-in-training, programs for camp groups, drop-in art programs for families and internship programs for youth focusing on urban forest restoration and science research. The department runs a number of partnership programs, including Con Edison Stem Days Out for school groups, NYC DOE’s STEM Matters school break programs, New York Public Library’s Culture Pass programs, and programs designed specifically for The Bronx Institute.

Responsibilities

The Director of Education is a member of the senior management team and is responsible for designing, administering, evaluating and expanding programs for school-aged children, youth, educators and families. The position reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for supervising up to six full-time staff and several part-time staff. The Director develops and fosters external partnerships with area schools, and education and cultural organizations, among others, staying abreast of trends in the field of science and STEAM education. In addition, the Director serves on inter-departmental committees and collaborates on various organization-wide projects.

Current education programs include:

  • Family Art Project, serving 17,000 adults and children with year-round weekend programming
  • School Programs, field trip programs aligned with learning standards providing place-based learning focused on nature and arts, serving 10,000 NYC school children
  • Professional Development for Teachers is nature-based workshops for educators integrating Wave Hill curriculum and educational methods
  • Youth Internship Programs
  • Arts, Community and Environmental Stewards (ACES), a year-long internship for NYC youth exploring nature-informed arts education and supporting the Family Art Project
  • Forest Project, summer internship in ecological restoration and urban ecology for NYC high school students. Incorporating hands-on field experiences and field-based coursework
  • Woodland Ecology Research Mentorship (WERM), 14-month internship for NYC high school students working with scientist mentors to gain knowledge of ecological principles and science research methods

Qualifications and Requirements

The Director of Education is an energetic, strategic professional with an established track record of progressively responsible experience in education, including several years in a managerial role, preferably in a cultural institution, together with experience working with New York City public schools and teachers. The position requires an individual with exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills, as well as an outstanding ability to communicate. Significant experience in science is a must, and experience in the arts is a plus.

In addition, candidates should possess:

  • Master’s Degree in Education, or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of STEM/STEAM curriculum
  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff with strong and supportive leadership
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work harmoniously in a team-based organization
  • Experience administering programs in non-traditional or experiential education environments
  • Creative ability , particularly in developing innovative programs
  • Strategic planning and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent analytical ability
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and experience speaking and presenting publicly
