Forest Project Summer 2022 Crew Leader
Role and Requirements
- Work with Senior Manager of Youth Programs and Woodland Initiatives and Forest Project Senior Crew Leader to develop and implement a restoration plan for their assigned site.
- Lead a crew of six to seven interns in field work, data collection and team building.
- Maintain an open, friendly, and productive dynamic within the crew.
- Document work through blogs, videos, social media and photography.
- Assist with administrative duties, as well as planning for activities, special projects and field studies.
- Current or recent undergraduate student with a demonstrated interest in environmental issues.
- Basic knowledge of forest restoration with eagerness and self-motivation to learn more as needed throughout the summer.
- Ability to work outdoors with little supervision, and to perform labor-intensive tasks.
- Must be enthusiastic, organized, possess strong interpersonal skills and be flexible.
- Coursework and/or experience in one or more of the following areas: natural resources, ecology, plant science, environmental science or GIS.
Due to Covid-19, there is a chance that some portion of the program will take place virtually. Typically, the Crew Leader works primarily outdoors, supervising one of the Forest Project’s crew (a group of 6 to 8 interns). Supervision will primarily take place in Wave Hill’s Woodlands and Ecology Building, though the Crew Leader is also expected to act as a chaperone per any off-site field trips. While outside, the Crew Leader should expect to traverse all of Wave Hill’s Woodlands, both on and off path – particularly within the boundaries of their own site. The Crew Leader will share the Ecology Building space (only accessible by stairs) largely in a supervisory role of all the Forest Project interns, along with the three other Crew Leaders, the Senior Crew leader, other staff and interns from the WERM program.
Schedule and Salary
This is a part-time, seasonal position running from June 7 through August 27, 2022. These dates include training and post-program wrap-up, with some flexibility with regards to the end date. The hourly rate is $17 per hour, and the hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:30AM to 4:30PM.
