Full-Time School Programs Coordinator

Facilitating learning experiences for Pre-K to 12th graders

The Education Department provides hands-on learning experiences for children, youth, teachers and intergenerational groups of visitors in the arts and sciences to educate and inspire life-long learners. School Programs at Wave Hill connect students to the natural world with high quality, personal, and hands-on experiences.

Roles & Responsibilities

The School Programs Coordinator facilitates and oversees all learning experiences for students in pre-K to 12th grade students including in-person and virtual academic year field trips, and summer camps. The Coordinator supports partnership programs/courses on a range of topics including natural sciences, art and local history, and teacher professional workshops. In collaboration with education staff the Coordinator researches, compiles and writes pedagogically appropriate lesson plans with a progressive, social and environmental justice-oriented teaching and learning style.

The Coordinator is responsible for the management and maintenance of supplies and education spaces. This individual supervises and trains school program interns and part time staff. The Coordinator works with the Education Assistant to ensure efficient administration of all school programming, including scheduling/booking programs, ordering supplies and processing check requests. The Coordinator supports department and institutional programs as needed.
 

Requirements

The Coordinator must have experience teaching with school communities in an informal setting and demonstrate cultural competency to work with diverse audiences. This individual must be comfortable interacting with large groups in the outdoors and in a classroom setting teaching natural science topics to all grade levels. In addition to teaching and administrative duties, additional requirements include:

  • Degree in education, environmental/nature education, museum education or related field
  • Excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills
  • A minimum of 2-3 years relevant experience teaching with school community audiences
  • Strong interest in Wave Hill’s education programs and mission
  • Cultural competency to work with diverse and local Bronx communities
  • Computer skills that include remote platforms and Microsoft Office
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus

 

Workspace

The primary workspace is in Wave Hill House, which has an accessible, ground-level entrance at the front of the building with a power-assist door. The restroom on the ground level is all-gender and ADA-compliant. Additional ADA-compliant restrooms are available on the lower level, which can be accessed by elevator. Due to the historic nature of Wave Hill House, the education program office located on the third floor is not wheelchair accessible. This area is reachable by a flight of wooden stairs totaling 19 steps. When outside, the educator should expect to traverse a variety of routes along mixed-material pathways and varying elevations.

 

Schedule & Salary

This is a full-time position reporting to the Assistant Director of Education. There is some offsite travel to schools and partner organizations, and occasional evenings and weekend days required. Salary is $50,000, plus benefits including: medical, dental, vision insurance; paid time off; 401k, pension plan and life insurance.
