Visitor Guidelines

A Place of Respect & Welcome

We strive to provide a place of tranquility, beauty and safety for everyone to enjoy and connect with the natural world in a welcoming environment for both visitors and staff. We encourage you to explore and enjoy the gardens. As you do so, please be mindful of the following guidelines.

Help us provide a safe place for everyone:

  • Be respectful and welcoming to other people on the property.
  • Follow all current health and safety guidelines.
  • Be considerate of others by using headphones with digital devices.
  • Leave blankets, rollerblades, skateboards, scooters, balls, frisbees and other such equipment at home. Bicycles can be locked up at the entrance.
  • Refrain from smoking and vaping. These are prohibited on Wave Hill property under New York City law.
  • Leave pets at home. Only trained service animals are permitted. Please see our pet policy.

Please respect your fellow visitors and the staff. Wave Hill does not tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia or any discriminatory language or actions. If you find yourself, or witness others, being the target of such behavior you can take immediate action by speaking to any staff member or calling 718. 549.3200. We encourage you to report any incidences of discrimination or harassment by filing out a Conduct Report Form available at the front entrance, Visitor Center and Wave Hill House reception desk, or by submitting your report online.

Help us take care of the gardens:

  • Keep the Garden clean and green. Place trash in receptacles and deposit bottles, cans and newspapers in recycling containers.
  • Use only designated areas for eating and drinking—Glyndor Picnic Area for picnicking, and The Café at Wave Hill House and Kate French Terrace for enjoying food from our caterer Great Performances.
  • Enjoy and explore the gardens. We all share the space; please do not pick flowers and plants so others can enjoy them. Help care for our wonderful trees by not climbing or hanging on them. And please do not step or play in garden beds or water features.
  • Feel free to walk, sit, lie and even roll on the grass! But please keep towels and blankets off the lawns as they can harm the grass.
  • Tripods and easels welcome, but please keep them out of the Flower Garden, Wild Garden, Dry & Herb Gardens, the Marco Polo Stufano Conservatory and anywhere the pathways are narrow.
  • Let wildlife be wild by keeping your distance.

Wave Hill staff are available to answer questions and provide information about membership, programs, art installations and garden tours.
