Flowers tell powerful stories. They carry memory, meaning, and hope. Across cultures and generations, plants mark our milestones, honor our ancestors, and quietly invite us to see the world differently. In this special talk, author and gardener Teresa Speight shares how floriculture can change the direction of our lives.

Drawing from her book, Black Flora: Inspiring Profiles of Floriculture’s New Vanguard,  Speight highlights contemporary Black florists, floral designers, and flower farmers who felt the unexpected call to work with plants and are now paving the way for new generations. Their stories reveal how flowers can become pathways to self-expression and joy, carrying forward deep traditions of care, resilience, and creativity. Set against the landscape at Wave Hill, this talk invites gardening professionals, aspiring flower experts, artists, and all interested in how our relationship with plants can connect our inner creativity to the living world.

Following the talk, join Teresa for a book signing and conversation with light refreshments. Copies of Black Flora: Inspiring Profiles of Floriculture’s New Vanguard will be available for purchase onsite.

Wave Hill House and Armor Hall are wheelchair-accessible. There is an accessible, ground-level entrance at the front of the building with a power-assist door. The restroom on the ground level is all-gender and ADA-compliant. Additional ADA-compliant restrooms are available on the lower level, which can be accessed by elevator.
