Summer stories in the garden wave hill

Join Wave Hill and Literacy Inc. educators for storytime in the garden! Author and illustrator Anna Kim will bring her book Danbi's Favorite Day to life through interactive book readings and related activities. In rain or other extreme weather, the program meets in the Gund Theater in Wave Hill House. Ideal for children ages three to six with an adult.

Drop-in with limited capacity, first come first serve. Questions? Please email us at information@wavehill.org or call 718.549.3200 x251.

Literacy Inc. works day in and day out throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island, to provide reading and learning opportunities for children so that they grow into competent readers, ready to succeed in school and in life.

The route leading to the Flower Garden is made of mixed-material pathways with little change in grade. The program will be seated on the ground with chairs available for a limited number of guests.

Wave Hill House is located along a paved route with moderate changes in grade. The building is wheelchair-accessible. There is an accessible, ground-level entrance at the front of the building with a power-assist door. The restroom on the ground level is all-gender and ADA-compliant. Additional ADA-compliant restrooms are available on the lower level, which can be accessed by elevator.

Anna was born in Seoul, South Korea, and immigrated to the United States with her family. As a child, she was always doodling around the edges of her notebooks and any loose scraps of paper she could find, but her first love was music. After training as a classical pianist and earning a B.A in psychology from Wellesley College, she devoted herself to teaching music to children. During those years of teaching, she discovered that drawing cartoons on yellow stickies worked magic for kids who couldn't sit still.

The idea for creating Danbi came while looking for picture books for her nieces. She thought there needed to be more character-based stories reflecting the multicultural world we live in, and created the indomitable Danbi and her diverse friends. In illustrations filled with intimate details, Anna brings Danbi to life, as she takes on the world with courage, ingenuity, and unbridled optimism. Anna's dream is that young readers will make Danbi their friend, and grow to celebrate with her the wonderful diversity of our world and the magic of friendship. Anna won an Asian Pacific American Honor Award for literature for Danbi Leads the School Parade. She lives in a quiet part of New York City, where she can see trees and hear birds.
