Blachly and Shaw are collaborators who assume the role of archivists and editors for the fictional Chadwick Family Papers. They disseminate their findings within this collection through educational displays, exhibitions, lectures and essays. The photos and documents on view here revisit an earlier project at Wave Hill, Bashford’s Grotto, which was shown in 2006 as part of the exhibition Garden Improvement. This installation and accompanying performance was based on invented research from the Chadwick archive on Bashford Dean. The Chadwicks claimed to uncover models and plans that Dean had prepared for the construction of a small volcano―complete with pyrotechnic effects―on the grounds of his home at Wave Hill. As with other works presented under the guise of the Chadwicks, Bashford’s Grotto playfully questions the way history is constructed and the role of cultural institutions in presenting it. By revisiting this piece within the context of an exhibition honoring Bashford Dean, Blachly and Shaw suggest that their own creation has become a chapter in the historical account of this man’s life.

As editors of the Chadwick Family Papers, Blachly and Shaw have exhibited work and given lectures related to their findings at the Winkleman Gallery, New York, NY; Southern Exposure, San Francisco, CA; Museum of Art and Design, New York, NY; The Tate Modern, London, England; and the Queens Museum of Art, Flushing, NY. They have also published a book, The Chadwick Family Papers (A Brief Public Glimpse), which is a compilation of these projects. Blachly, an artist, received a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Shaw, is a poet and writer, received a BA from Cornell University and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
