Mind-Builders Creative Arts Center Stage Band

Join us for a performance by Mind-Builders Creative Arts Center Stage Band in collaboration with exhibiting artists Angel Nevarez and Valerie Tevere that reimagines music through experimentation, improvisation, and collective listening. Organized as part of the exhibition As far as the ear can hear and shaped by the artists' practice of reinterpreting musical traditions across genres and histories, the Stage Band will collaborate with Nevarez and Tevere to create a new composition that blends and reinterprets musical genres through collective experimentation and performance.
Founded in 2012, Mind-Builders Creative Arts Center Stage Band is comprised of a diverse group of students, ranging from ages 11 to over 70. Under the directorship of Christopher Palmer, these dedicated musicians have developed an extensive repertoire of featuring original arrangements and compositions that showcase a blending in different styles including jazz, RnB, Latin, rock, pop, and more. Their repertoire highlights such composers as Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Stevie Wonder, amongst others. As an incubator for a next generation of Bronx music, musicians and creatives, the Stage Band has proudly been presented in several venues throughout New York City and the Bronx. Several members have blossomed into budding composers, with original songs integrated into the Band’s repertoire, and alum have gone on to pursue continued education in music in schools such as Purchase College. The Mind-Builders Stage Band is proudly known as the reigning champions of the High Note Festival and the Music in the Parks competitions, bringing home the gold trophies for four consecutive years.

Mind-Builders Creative Arts Center is a beacon of arts and creative and youth development in the Bronx. Located in the Northeast Bronx, Mind-Builders provides quality music, dance, theater, and martial arts programs for over 750 students a year. Centered on using creative expression as a vehicle for empowerment, Mind-Builders' initiatives allow youth to express themselves, realize their full potential, and live dynamic and rewarding lives. With a trajectory nearly 50 years strong, Mind-Builders has a long-standing legacy of impacting the presence and brilliance of NYC's next generations.

Valerie Tevere & Angel Nevarez
Valerie Tevere & Angel Nevarez
Angel Nevarez and Valerie Tevere are interdisciplinary artists whose practice spans over twenty years of projects that actuate music and sound, radio, dissent, and the cultural complexities of the public sphere. The artists have produced works in video installation, lyric writing, performance, and photography. Their research interests lie in the intersection between music, civic action, and historical moments that resonate through distinct musical instrumentation and sonorous traditions.
Nevarez and Tevere have exhibited and screened their work at The Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim Museum, Creative Time, New Museum, and Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York; Manifesta 8/Spain; Museo Raúl Anguiano, Guadalajara, Mexico; Casino Luxembourg, LU; Henie Onstad Art Centre, Høvikodden, Norway; Taxispalais, Innsbruck, Austria, and elsewhere. The first US survey of their work was presented at the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, in 2016. Their fellowships and grants include a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Creative Capital fellowship, an Art Matters grant, an NEA Project Grant, and a Franklin Furnace Performance Art fellowship. Both Nevarez and Tevere were Studio Fellows at The Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program, artists-in-residence at Wave Hill and Pioneer Works in New York; the International Artists Studio Program in Sweden; Grand Central Art Center, Santa Ana, CA; Artpace, San Antonio, TX; Marble House Project, Dorset, VT; Interlude, Livingston, NY; and Antenna Gallery, New Orleans.
Nevarez, also a musician, studied Biology at the University of California, San Diego, and has taught at various Universities and Art Schools in New York and across the Northeast.
Tevere earned an MFA in photography from California Institute of the Arts and a BA in political science from the University of California, San Diego, and is Professor of Media Culture at the College of Staten Island / City University of New York.
